All of us have had a headache at one time or another. For the most part, it’s nothing to be super concerned about. However, being that pain is a way of alerting us to when something is going on within our bodies, if you happen to have headaches on a frequent basis, it’s a good idea to keep a headache diary. It should include the times of day when your head hurts, the level of intensity that you experience along with how long the headaches last. If you sense that they continue to reoccur and/or they are getting stronger, it’s a good idea to see your doctor just as soon as possible.

But if you only have a headache every once in a while and you’re looking for some ways to reduce and ultimately prevent them without the use of medication, here are five things that can eliminate head pain and have you feeling better in no time.

Watch what you eat. Did you know that there are foods you can eat that will actually help to reduce headache pain? Some of them include bananas (they help to balance your electrolytes); spinach (the Vitamin B is a stress relaxant); flaxseed (it has plenty of anti-inflammatory agents in it); spicy salsa (it will clear up your sinuses) and corn (the Vitamin B3 supports your blood vessels and calms your senses).

Drink plenty of fluids. Being that dehydration is directly attributed to headache pain, it’s also important that you consume a lot of fluids. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water is ideal although you can also snack on watermelon and popsicles to also get a lot of fluids into your system.

Get lots of sleep. When your body is sleep-deprived, one of the ways that it will let you know it is by the head pain that you feel. That’s why it’s also a good idea to put your body on a sleep schedule. Ideally, you need between 6-8 hours each night. If you’re someone who has been getting less than five while thinking that you can “catch up on the weekends”, catching up on sleep is a myth. Your body needs rest every single night.

Exercise more. Working out 2-3 times per week (for about 45 minutes) is good for your overall health and well-being. However, if you were wondering how it can directly help to reduce or even prevent headaches, when you’re exercising, it elevates your endorphins. That naturally helps to decrease any physical discomfort that you might be feeling. Plus, exercise can remove head pain because it helps to reduce stress.

Be aware of your stress triggers. Speaking of stress, if you were to consult with someone who works at therapy office like Results Physiotherapy about another way to naturally reduce head pain, something else that they might mention is to pay attention to what triggers your stress. Is it your job? Is it a particular relationship? Whatever is causing you to tense up, start by being cognizant of it and finding new ways to deal with your trigger. Most ailments, including headaches, are connected to stress. Therefore, you must remain calm and serene as much as possible.
