5 Effective Spine Care Tips for Kids

Just because children are young in age, it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be taking care of their spines. Children are perhaps the most susceptible to various spinal issues – from decreased bone density, stunted growth and even scoliosis. Scoliosis is a disorder that causes curvature of the spine – if the condition starts early enough, it could be permanent. A curved spine can cause all sorts of problems later in life. So, as a parent, it is imperative to have a number of healthy spine tips to make sure your child’s back stays strong and avoids some of the more common issues that can arise because of age. Here are five effective spine care tips for kids.

  1. Maintain a healthy diet. Eating healthily is incredibly important for children, especially during their early developmental stage. When it comes to their spines, it is important to eat plenty of dishes with protein and other essential nutrients. It is also important not to eat certain foods, like junk food, fast food and foods that are high in synthetic sugars. High fructose corn syrup can do a lot of damage to the bones. A healthy diet will make sure the spine grows normally – without curvature or developmental issues.
  2. Maintain an active lifestyle. It is also important for children to do plenty of playing outside – at the park, at the jungle gym, outside the house; wherever they can get plenty of exercise. If you can’t get to the park all the time, you may want to install a basketball hoop over the garage or in the backyard, so that it encourages your child to be outside and running around. The less movement your child gets, the less physically fit they will be, which can severely affect spinal growth. So, you want to have some strict guidelines when it comes to balancing time spent inside and watching TV with time spent going outside to play.
  3. Maintain rules regarding cellphone use and video games. As a parent, you can’t just let your child play video games all day long. Also, you don’t want them to be glued to a cell phone either. So, you want to have a set number of time limits that your child is allowed to be on their phone. As a parent, it is important to be strict about these guidelines, because you don’t want your children to be sneaking time with their phones and video games when you aren’t looking.
  4. Maintain an annual schedule of doctor visits and checkups. It is important to take your child to have an annual physical, but it is also important to take your child to a spine specialist, like Texas Orthopedics, because you want to catch things like scoliosis sooner rather than later. If you catch major spinal issues early, you have a better chance of finding solutions.
  5. Maintain a sense of safety to avoid injuries. Injuries as children can turn into serious problems later in life, especially spinal injuries. So, it is important to make sure your child stays safe when playing outside, riding a bike or doing any other activity. In the end, the safer your child is, the better off their spine will be – a spinal injury can be a lifelong ailment, so the last thing you want is to suffer from an injury early on in life.
