Urban malnutrition is a rising problem and occurs when your diet looks balanced, but you are not getting the right nutrients. Prenatal vitamins are recommended in certain cases to ensure you have an adequate supply of all nutrients required during your pregnancy.

Iron is very rarely consumed by women in adequate quantities. Although iron rich foods like leafy green vegetables, dates, and others are widely available; their appropriate DV required each day is fairly low. Hence prenatal vitamins with iron are recommended for healthy brain and heart development of children.

Also,iron plays a key role in the production of hemoglobin. When hemoglobin is low, you may become anemic.

Folic Acid

Supplementing folic acid tends to be absorbed better than ones from natural sources. Adequacy of folic acid prevents issues like cleft lip, cleft palate, neural tube defects, and certain heart conditions.

For proper mapping and development of DNA, folic acid, which is a synthetic formof vitamin B9, is required. Pregnant women are recommended to take at least 400 mcg of folic acid everyday. Make sure the vitamin B supplement you are taking does not exceed 1000mg. Speak with your physician if you have any questions.


Calcium tablets are relatively larger tablets or pills then other vitamins and minerals. Calcium is essential for bone development and bodily functions. Calcium rich sources like dairy products are widely available.  During your pregnancy, calcium is important. If not moderately consumed, calcium tablets can cause kidney stones. Consult your medical practitioner for correct dosage.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, a fat soluble vitamin, is necessary to maintain adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus. If you are consuming a calcium rich diet but still having deficiency, it is the time to check for vitamin D levels.

You can acquire good amounts of vitamin D from salmon, cereals, mackerel, sardines and egg yolks. Vitamin D fortified foods are widely available. The lack of vitamin D can cause fractures, abnormal bone growth and rickets in infants. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are recommended to take 1500 to 2000 UI of Vitamin D everyday. Most pre natal vitamins have 400 IU of Vitamin D in it. Vitamin D protects from skin darkening during pregnancy time from UV rays too.


There is no definite brand of pre natal vitamins. Try to find ones that include micro nutrients like zinc, copper, magnesium and vitamin C. Prenatal vitamins are a great addition to a good diet, not a substitute.

Also in most cases people are skeptical about supplements. A medical practitioner’s advice is mandatory before usage. Some prenatal vitamin supplements tend to create constipation. To avoid this, continue with adequate exercise after consultation and maybe take a stool softener if you’re having troubles.
