Varicose And Spider Veins: How We Can Help

Varicose and spider veins are conditions that mainly affect the legs and can be both painful and unsightly. Most people who suffer from either condition would like to see the affects removed so the leg area is restored to its natural beauty. At the Center for Interventional Medicine, we provide testing options to determine which condition you have and then recommend the right procedure to remove the issue.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a condition where the veins of the legs become swollen and can be seen through the skin. The veins become dark in color and appear to be bulging out or twisted. If this condition is left untreated, the area can begin to look worse and pain or itching can occur. Varicose veins are caused from venous reflux disease which is far from uncommon. 40 million Americans suffer from this disease and more women than men. At the Center for Interventional Medicine, we can provide testing and treatment options to clear a varicose issue and return your legs to normalcy.

Spider Veins

With spider veins, patients have a milder case of varicose veining. When spider veins occur, you will have a nesting affect in the veins. The veins will appear to be blue or red and have multiple lines gathered underneath the skin. This is not a serious issue but many do not like the look of the spider veins so they have the condition treated.

Symptoms of Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

The symptoms of either condition will vary. You may notice your veins are beginning to protrude more or are gathering together. The condition begins with swelling and bulging. Eventually, if left untreated, the area will continue to swell and can begin to become red and inflamed, which causes an itching sensation. You may also have an achy feeling in the affected area. A severe case of varicose veins can lead to deep vein thrombosis which can cause severe swelling in the leg area and must be treated quickly.

Testing the Area

Our team of physicians are here to assist you with veining issues. We can provide testing procedures to determine what is going on with the veins in the leg area. We will first ask you a series of questions such as your overall health, history of medical conditions and procedures as well as what symptoms you are seeing in the affected area. A physical exam will also take place. The texture and color of the veins in the area will be inspected and based on the exam, the physician will be able to determine if you have venous reflux disease. To help confirm a diagnosis, the physician may decide to conduct a duplex ultrasound test.

The duplex ultrasound test will use high frequency waves in a painless procedure that takes around 20 minutes for each leg. The patient may lay down or stand to conduct the test. The ultrasound will help determine if the superficial veins have the disease. The ultrasound will be able to see if the blood is flowing backward in the veins. The test will also be able to determine if there are blood clots in the leg area.

Procedures Offered

Once our physicians have determined you have a varicose veining issue, we will then discuss the types of treatment we can provide. We offer three services:

  • Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Phlebectomy

These procedures are non-invasive and do not require a hospital stay. Each treatment is different. One treatment will remove the affected vein while another treatment will cause the affected vein to shut down. Our highly trained physicians will explain each treatment thoroughly to help you have a better understanding of what each treatment can provide and then help you determine which option will work best.
