How to get into sailing

Sailing is a great sport, offering something for everyone. Some love the relaxation of being out on the sea while others look for a challenge, such as sailing competitively. You may enjoy the solitude with only the sea and the sky for company or you may sail in a group or with the whole family. If this appeals to you, getting into sailing can be easier than you think.

Do I need to train?

Having some sailing instruction is strongly recommended. The water is unpredictable and can be dangerous. You might learn to sail by sailing alongside a more experienced friend until you are confident in what you are doing.

Another effective way to learn is to take a sailing course such as a day skipper course with an RYA-recognised training centre or sailing club like Solent Boat Training. A course can help you build skills quickly, getting you to a standard where you can safely sail alone.

Do I need my own boat?

It isn’t necessary to own your own boat to enjoy sailing. Boats can be borrowed or hired. Boats also always need crews, so you can enjoy sailing by crewing someone else’s boat.

If you do decide to buy your own boat, a second-hand one is a cheaper option with second-hand dinghies costing as little as a few hundred pounds, although you will also need to consider storage and mooring costs.

What else do I need?

One of the key considerations when sailing is keeping warm and dry. You will need a good waterproof if on a yacht, while dinghy sailors often opt for a wetsuit as they are nearer the water. In winter you will want thermals, boots, gloves and a hat, while in the summer a lightweight wicking base layer can keep you dry and comfortable.

A life jacket or buoyancy aid is essential and you should keep a first aid kit in waterproof packaging on board.

You will also need a sense of adventure as you embark on this exciting new hobby where no two trips are the same.
